Bailey Inglish, founder of Bonham, brought the first settlers to claim homesteads on the
rich black land of the Red River Valley in the central part of what was to become Fannin county,
in March 1837. As the danger of Indian raids began to increase, Bailey Inglish convinced his neighbors to construct a
fort and stockade to provide a safe haven for the families of the area. Fort Inglish was used until 1843 when the Indians moved
further west. This replica was built in 1976, as a Fannin County Bicentennial project. Three 1830’s log cabins from the
Fannin County area were relocated surrounding the stockade. They have been furnished to represent a frontier cabin,
a trading post, and a blacksmith shop. A school/church a gift shop are recent additions. A doctor’s buggy and

Enjoy a walking tour around the Bonham Square
Twelve plaques located around the Bonham Square will guide you through Bonham's history.

Around the Square ...
In the autumn of 1837, a small frontier village began to develop in the vicinity of Fort Inglish near the banks of Bois D'Arc Creek.
A cluster of residential cabins and retail establishments soon defined a settlement with a village green in the center of the enclave named for the fort.
In 1843, the village, now named Bois d'Arc, had its name changed to Bonham and became the new county seat for Fannin County, Owner of much of the land west of the village and the green in the center of the activity was John p, Simpson. At his own expense, he erected a one story log cabin in the center of the green to serve as the seat of justice for the county. More businesses began to develop along the east and west sides of the courthouse and just north and south of the square on what is today Main Street.
Wilkes Fletcher's school was opened on the southeast corner and a new post office opened its doors near the southwest corner. A hotel was constructed in the middle ofthe south side with no other structures around it. It was to be many years before the east side saw anything more than cursory development.
By 1900, all four sides of the square were solidly developed. The widest possible range of retail activity was available to the citizens from hotels to dry goods stores, hardware to groceries, banks to saloons, lawyers and physicians, billiard halls and opera houses. Before the town reached the twentieth century, three courthouses had been built to replace the original log structure. Downtown was the center of activity, a source of pride, and the heart of the community.
The Walkabout Tour of the Legendary Bonham ...
1. DR. PENWELL'S ORDEAL - They left him swinging in the breeze.
2. HOTEL ALEXANDER - Carrie Nation left her hatchet at home when she slept here.
3. THE MOST DANGEROUS GUNMAN IN TEXAS - Did he really shoot a man for snoring?
4. MURDER OF SHERIFF RAGSDALE - "You lived like a coward, die like a man."
5. FALL OF A RENEGADE - The only thing he shot up was the courthouse weathervane.
6. A TALENT TOO SOON GONE - His legacy ... the stack of swing solos he recorded with Goodman.
7. RUSSELL'S OPERA HOUSE - Cast and Crew hightailed it for the next train west.
8. SHOWDOWN - He stepped out, pistols drawn and ordered, "Draw traitor."
9. ENIGMA IN A RIDDLE - His one-room cabin served as the center of an empire.
10. END OF THE LINE - This trolley too went "Clang, Clang, Clang."
11. BONHAM FROM THE START - Two Centuries of Texas Legend.
12. WHAT'S IN A NAME - Legend has it. .. no one knows the real origin of the name.
